Tips & Tricks: How to create your job hunting plan

I know, I know.. I promised to myself I won't forget about my blog - and what happened? Just that, yeah! After my work at Louis Vuitton started I was totally busy, and well, from then on I forgot to blog. So, Broken promises - CHECK! Hehe.. but I'll try to fix this :)

A lot has been going on.. or not! After the awesome experience I had at LVMH in Brussels, I kept failing in finding a job. First of all, I wanted to find a job that will not require me to travel at least 4h per day, restricting my job search to Antwerp only. At the moment I'm still searching for my dream job, or at least something that would make me happy! But surely along the way I learned how to deal with job interviews, job searching, networking and all that comes along. That's why I decided to share it also here :)

1. Update that CV

First and for all, update that CV (and cover letter ;) ). If you're coming from a recent job experience, make sure to include that in your CV. If it's an important job experience, make sure to make it stand out, without exaggerating (always be honest & realistic). A bit of sparkle never hurts ;) I would also recommend to check your CV layout & format - it might be outdated, so try to make it modern and attractive. I found the inspiration for mine on Pinterest! There you can find a lot of examples of professional CV's that do stand out. Lastly, do not forget to spell check!! :)

2. Where do you want to go?

When my contract at LV expired, I really set my mind to continue finding jobs in the fashion industry. I was so in love with it that it kept me motivated and positive. That's why I created a list (actually they are more like website links) of companies where I'd love to work or others that interest me. In my case I really knew where to go. But, do YOU know where do you want to go? I believe that's what you should ask yourself before starting any job search. Do you want to continue working in the same field, or try something new? Are you passionate about certain companies? Write it down!

3. Register to newsletters

From my experience I saw that the more I was trying to search, each day, on those same websites, same keywords, just drove me insane & stressed. I found quite some 'advice' on how to 'compulsively' check the companies you want to work for, work fields, etc. each how many minutes per day.. It drives you crazy! I believe that's the opposite of what you should be doing. On the other hand, I used technology! Literally, to every company/job website/social media I was interested in I subscribed to newsletters. Through company websites there is almost always a link where you can subscribe to get more information when a vacancy is up and through job websites/interims, I created my 'keywords' for which I get a daily reminder. Set up - click & go - directly in your email box! Easy as that :)

4. Create a calendar and stick with it

In the long run I realised that daily compulsive job search ain't gonna work. So instead I set up certain days where I would dedicate some hours to more extensive job search and CV & cover letter improvement. For me that is Monday and Thursday, but you could do it more than twice. It also depends on the flow of vacancies, if there are not many, I do it once per week. This system allowed me to not get negative about job search and keep positive. It also means that you give yourself time to improve and get new ideas, which you don't if you'd be busy with it everyday.

5. Don't mind those requirements!

Experience has taught me to be daring. Yes, that's right, daring! I thought to myself so so so many times: 'I'd LOVE that position, but I don't have the right requirements..' So what?! If you don't try, you'll never know! And indeed that's what you should do, just apply, the worst it can happen is that they don't give you a shot. But at least you tried, and that's what matters! Being daring brings confidence, something you really need when job hunting and especially when unemployed for a long time. So why not try? :)

I hope you enjoyed my job hunting battle plan :) What is yours??

Broken Promises..

Dear readers..

I failed the promise I made to myself.. I totally forgot to blog!! In the chaos of: finishing off my Master studies with the thesis presentation & ceremony, my parents visiting me for a week, trying to find a job.. I completely forgot that I actually started a blog, ha! :) So let's start with the updates.
After successfully finishing my master thesis & finalising my year, a graduation ceremony followed. There, we had to present our theses to professors, friends & family, and of course, afterwards there was a refreshment 'party' thingie. Let's not go in the detail of that, I think that saying 'dutch people are cheapskates' says enough :D it wasn't really a WOW ceremony - too bad though! However, I had the chance to say goodbye to my professors and fellow students. It was a bit nostalgic, but nice at the same time. I will miss the stressing study moments, complaining on assignments, staying up all night writing papers, etc. Happy stressy days :) Here's a picture of my Finnish partner in crime Virpi, will miss her for sure! <3 And a group picture with my supervisor and parents.. note that only me and my bf are actually smiling haha :)

And now the real life! Oh dear.. of course my hopes of actually finding something in my field almost completely died. After checking the available positions and the requirements, thank you, goodbye. It is insane.. even with a master done, they don't really care, since you don't have experiences.. and let's be honest, travel&leisure jobs are insanely lacking in Belgium. That's why I changed my tactics and gave it a shoot in the fashion industry. Antwerp being one of the fashion capitals, and fashion having English as lingua franca, increases the chances of an actually job - that might be even interesting! :D I wouldn't mind going into fashion marketing. So, I scored myself a temporary job at Louis Vuitton, as a client advisor. It took long 3 interviews to get through, but I hope it will be worth it :D It is a basic (quite well paid) job, but it is a start! I think it will be a good reference to future jobs in the field. Time will tell! I think that nowadays is better to be adaptable than picky in jobs, otherwise you'll likely never get where you want to go. Especially if you lack network and references. Small steps lead to great things :)

Last update that I must mention is the Film Fest Gent that I attended this week. What an awesome experience - in a cocktail dress! :D Me and my boyfriend got VIP tickets to the premiere of the festival, since his step brother is actually the actor in the movie chosen for the opening ceremony - yeah, cool stuff!! The movie was D'ardennen (english: The Ardennes) a belgian masterpiece by Robin Pront, starring Jeroen Perceval, Veerle Baetens and Kevin Janssens in the main roles. And let me tell you, it is totally worth watching! A perfect criminal drama, real and astonishing. No wonder it got a 7,7 ranking on IMDB (and the rating is rising daily haha :) ). It is THAT good. It got insane recognition at the Toronto International Film Festival. And for those that would like to get a taste of the movie, here's the trailer (btw it is now in cinemas):

Me & Jeoren at the after paty - VIP & the end of the premiere movie with the main cast! :)

Well.. that's it for today, a big update on things & thoughts as always.. Upcoming will be the unboxing of my new Singer sewing machine - yes, I am starting my journey in DIY sewing thingies.. I'm already doing a small project for my little monster Tootsie - but that's for the next blog post :)

Stay tuned! xoxo

MSc graduate.. What?!

Hey everyone! A bit off topic here.. but since I mentioned this blog will involve also personal stuff, so why not! Tips&experiences are always a good topic :D
As mentioned in my previous post, last year I embarked in a MSc (master of science) journey in The Netherlands, in the field of social sciences - more specifically 'Leisure Studies'. What the heck are leisure studies, you might ask? Yes, no problem, I'm used to that question :D Leisure studies are a branch of the social sciences that include tourism, recreation, etc. But on a master level you can focus into communication, and let's say, shortly, all that involves an interaction with people and understanding their behaviour. A bit hard to clearly state what exactly it is - funny :p, but yeah. After you graduate from leisure studies you can practically work everywhere that includes working with people (HR, communications, PR, etc.) The confusion about this study field is due the fact that it has been crafted, literally, in The Netherlands and it is very common and spread through the country. That's why it is hard to explain to someone outside that country what the heck leisure studies are! :D
But coming back to the point of this blog post.. :) Yesterday, finally, we got our grades for the master thesis and I am so happy to say that I received a lovely 8 - probably the highest mark you can get in Holland as a common person, 9 and 10 are reserved to extraordinary people (aliens or something :D). My supervisor's sentence exactly: "Oh by the way, you got an 8." Whaat.. an 8?! Yes, yes, yes!! Happy, happy, happy kid :D! I think I deserved it. After all, I worked my ass off to write that thesis ;) My thesis topic involved 'Gentrification' - an urban problematic, and how can we tackle it through involvement between different actors (brief description :) ). I was and I'm still so passionate about that topic.. I might post something about it one day actually!
Losing the red line here again - not a good thing when writing a master thesis (TIP!), looking back I'm sure that doing a master did enrich my knowledge and look upon things, strengthen my critical and objective thinking, etc. but in the real world, as in, the job world, unfortunately I'm not sure if it is - that - valuable. Honestly, without any work experience a master will not ensure you a high paid position, but you'll have to work your way up as any other Bachelor graduate. Sad but true - unless you're lucky with networks or find an employer that will see 'the spark' in you :) Not to make it sound too pessimistic, but that's the reality. So, doing a master, YES, it is enriching, but do not expect to end up in the top positions after graduating - but that's not a bad thing, right? ;) You always have to start from somewhere, step by step it'll get you where you want to be! Bottom line - I think I would recommend to anyone doing a master, after all it is an experience, and we learn from experiences!
For now, I'm still pondering if to embark into a PhD or jsut get a job that will give me a stable amout of money.. Probably the latter :p After all these years of studying I deserve a bit of break hehe! A bit of fun from PhD comics:

This is my 'rant' for today, hope it's useful to someone. If you have any questions regarding studying for a postgraduate (or undergraduate), abroad, etc. I'm available and will do my best :)

Until the next post..

Sending love&hugs! ;)

Welcome to my page!

Hi everyone! Thank you for stopping by :) I decided to open this blog to share with you guys my thoughts about things I'm passionate about. So.. what am I passionate about? I have always been an animal lover and slowly throughout the years I tried to change my way of living in regard to animals. With this I mean especially, taking in consideration what the industry does to animals for mass consumption e.g. test on animals, industrial breeding of animals, etc. The more I grew, the more i became aware that what society is doing is totally wrong and if we wanted to change something it would have to come from each individual.. that's the hard bit right there ;p well, I knew and still know that alone I won't be able to change much, but small steps can lead to great changes! So that is why I committed myself not to buy or support brands that do test on animals, from cosmetics to cleaning products, and strive towards using cruelty free, eco friendly ones. So far I'm succeeding in my quest :D and I feel good about it! Unfortunately, I'm struggling into becoming a full vegetarian, I somehow still love to eat meat (on a limited scale), which kinda goes against my belief, but I'm sure I'll get there slowly.. :) So, back to my blog.. well, I will share everything that is related to bio, cruelty free products here, DIY, and all involving a more sustainable life.. Also some posts might be about my personal life etc. :)

Some info about me tho.. I'm a Slovenian girl (yes Slovenia, that little country in between Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary - still don't know? Check Google Maps :p) living in Belgium at the moment. How did I get here? Well, 2 years ago I decided to continue my master studies abroad in The Netherlands. That went well, since I'm going to graduate exactly in the upcoming September :D During my time abroad I meet Steven, my boyfriend and since he's Belgian we decided to live together and try this relationship thing out :) Turns out it is working quite well! Few months ago we decided to expand our 'family' and adopted a shelter dog, Tootsie - yes, you'll see more about her in my posts ;) Currently I'm looking for a job, boring life, so I thought blogging could lighten up a bit this situation, hehe!

I hope you will enjoy this blog, I'm looking forward to become a full time blogger :D
Until the next post..
